Silent Phones Please

It was almost 6 in the morning and I was already in a van on my way to work.

I was having a terrible headache and I wanted to sleep through the one and a half hour travel but I couldn’t. The mobile phone of the man behind me kept “ding-dong”-ing in full volume as he chats with someone, probably on FB messenger. (Yes, it was not the usual one-ding or one-tok notification sound, it was a highfalutin doorbell!)

I understand it is your space, your phone, your chat. You may have your reasons too, but if you would allow me this simple request, at least discreetly turn down the volume of your phone or put it in silent/vibrate mode. You are fully awake anyway… I am sure you’ll catch that next message as it pops through your screen or vibrates on your hand.

We all go through different things in life and you never know what that person next to you or in front of you went through the night before. She may be a mother who had to tend to her sick child  all-night. He may be an old man who’s body clock no longer allows him to get enough sleep. He may be an IT engineer who hasn’t had sleep in days working overtime, and only went home to get some clothes that day and is on his way back to work again. She may be a student who has been spending night-and-day studying for an upcoming exam. And so on.

That short travel time may well be the only time they can get to add a few more minutes of rest to their already tired souls.

A little peace and serenity would be appreciated.

And I quote:

“If we could look into each other’s hearts and understand the unique challenges each of us faces, I think we would treat each other much more gently, with more love, patience, tolerance, and care.”

P.S. The same goes for those who play music or videos thru their phone without headphones, or those with headphones but their sound  is so loud for everyone to still hear. ^^v

P.P.S. Might be good to be discreet in other public places like buses, trains or churches too! 🙂

Thank you.
