See What Matters

“Mendokoro tayo, my treat.”
“If bibilihan kita ng bag, ano mas gusto mo… brand x or brand y?”
Bili kita shoes?”

Pretty much shows hubby’s attempt these past few days to prep for Valentines day. But for some reason this year, he couldn’t get the answer he wanted. He was repeatedly turned down.

Was I waiting for suggestions of flowers or chocolates to come up? NO.

After spending years trying (and still trying) to declutter, I do not want another sentimental thingie on a box I’d find hard to dispose. And after gaining weight with my pre-diabetic sugar, chocolates should be a no-no. I already buy that for myself, by the way. Haha.

So come Valentine’s day, he woke up at 3 am, an hour before I did. Prepared our food and stuff for the day. Then drove at 4:30 in the morning from South to North of the metro to bring me to a local TV station.

Photographed/documented my stint.
Held my bag.
Encouraged me.
Laughed with me.
Said I was pretty.

And when my whole stint was over, I thanked him.

Then he uttered, “This is my Valentine’s gift to you!”

And I said, “exactly!”

Then we spent the rest of the day doing errands for the house, going through medical checkups, sleeping.

But I couldn’t be happier. I was thankful. To my husband. And to the Lord for my husband.

So as we were about to sleep, I couldn’t help but be amused reminiscing those times when we were younger and I got frustrated not having flowers. Actually in our decade of marriage, I think I only received flowers from him five times. But now I see, I’ve always been offered (and given) much better options.

And I couldn’t help but think that my long-time, happily married wife friends who are passing hints about Valentines on their fb walls are in fact, only doing it for fun.

Because I honestly think that when you start to see and experience what’s really important, you look past the flowers. They’re just a bonus.

So ladies, it’s okay if you let this day pass as ordinary, so long as you know and feel in your heart that you are (and have always been) special the rest of the 365 days in a year (plus 1 if it’s a leap year). And don’t just look at the more grandeur gestures. Notice the little things.

But gents, you have to make sure you do just that! Don’t wait for Valentines or special occasions to make her feel special. Make everyday special even in little ways. Tell her “I love you” and “God bless you” even if it already looks like a period to your every text message. Pick her up from work despite her OT and the traffic, or even if you are suffering from plantar fasciitis. Treat her to a good lunch or dinner that she starts to gain weight but you’d reassure her she’s still sexy. Even when her double-chin begs to disagree. Take your daughter to the hospital even if mommy’s not around. Wake up in the middle of the night to blow-dry your pee-stained bed (if for whatever reason your child decided to pee on her pants that night hahaha). Let her sleep when she wants to. Let her craft when she wants to. Watch Make It With You with her. Or Money Heist. Or The Witcher. Get her a glass of water. Talk in your sleep to ask her to sleep when she starts spending the night blogging about you. And so on.

Bottomline?

Love isn’t a big thing, it’s a million little things.

Happy Hearts Day!

I love you Daddymer! Again, thank you for the day. My heart is full.

P.S. Oh I did get flowers, the pastillas kind. Hihihi.
